Tips from the Pro: How to Practice Productively
The challenge for many tennis players is not actually trying to get out and practice, but rather practicing effectively. In fact, it is not necessary for two players to be of the same skill-level to practice, as long as some simple guidelines are met to ensure a productive practice.
Begin with some simple ball skills. For example: stand about two meters apart, jog on the spot and bounce-pass one tennis ball to each other. After 15-20 seconds, jog on the spot and under-hand toss the ball to each other (no bounce this time), again for 15-20 seconds. Finally, sidestep along the tramlines from the net to the baseline (one player on the singles line and the other on the doubles line) and bounce-pass the ball to each other. Return underhand tossing the ball to each other.
With racquets, begin tapping the ball over the net ensuring that the tennis ball bounces before it reaches your partner on the other side of the net. All you should be practicing here is footwork and contact point (in front of your front knee). After several minutes, move back to the service line. Continue rallying, again the ball bounces every time it crosses the net. You can add a little more swing this time.
Next, keep one player at the service line while the other player spends several minutes at the net practicing volleys. Then, change tasks.
Move back to the three-quarter court (half-way between the service line and the baseline) and rally for several minutes from there. For more of a challenge, only use one side of the court, or rally cross-court (diagonal). From this distance, you can generally use a full but slower swing.
Then move back to the baseline, either using the entire court, or, make it more challenging by only using one side of the court or rallying crosscourt.
From here, practice serve and return. One player practices serving, and the other player returns the serve attempting to return the ball within a one meter radius of the server. Note: If you can direct the return of serve this accurately to the server, you can also direct the ball away form the server. After a minute or two serving from each side of the court, change tasks.
From there, you can either play some fun points, or create new rallying areas and distances.
Note: If you create a &target area* with every shot/practice task, your success rate will increase because you have a focus with every shot that you are making.
