Carsten Schwarting was no stranger to Asia before being assigned to Shanghai. As a product marketing engineer of SCP Germany GmbH, Mr Schwarting’s job responsibility meant that he was on monthly business trips to Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing prior to his transfer.

Mr Schwarting has an appreciation for Shanghai and SRCA, “although this compound isn’t in the center of the city, it’s a nice place for families with kids,” he says.

Mrs Schwarting is originally from Korean and lived in Germany for more than 20 years. When she arrived in Shanghai, Mrs Schwarting suffered from culture shock. The transition was difficult, all aspects of life in Shanghai had changed for Mrs Schwarting, ranging from food, culture, weather, to simple tasks like commuting. After living in Shanghai for a year, Mrs Schwarting has found a new lease of life. “At SRCA, I can enjoy sunshine by the beach at the outdoor swimming pool and I get to meet people from all nationalities. I get the best of both worlds because I also get to go out shopping and socialize with my German friends.”

The Schwarting’s have two lovely kids. 7-year-old daughter Nadja studies at German School and goes to Korean language classes every Saturday. Nadja and mum also sometimes study Chinese together and take great pleasure in learning, whilst three-year-old son Flix, just wants to go swimming all the time.

The Schwarting’s favorite family pastime is eating spicy food. But with such a plethora of eating places in Shanghai, choosing a restaurant is no easy task.
